Marco was the first Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. He is a very important person in the world of One Piece. We were introduced to him back when Shanks came to visit Whitebeard on the Moby Dick. Shanks introduced him to us. Later, at the War of Marineford, we were properly introduced to him, and his Devil Fruit abilities were also revealed.
Marco was a very powerful fighter, capable of going head-to-head against an Admiral of the Marines. He possesses a Mythical Zoan Type of Devil Fruit that allows him to turn into a Phoenix at will, and heal any wounds that he has. Marco fought at the War, and ended up surviving. Later, he Captained the Whitebeard Pirates.
Soon after, during the two year timeskip, Marco’s Whitebeard Pirates clashed with the Blackbeard Pirates led by Marshall D. Teach. The battle was fierce, and it is said that Marco’s Whitebeard Pirates faced a crushing defeat. Since then, the whereabouts of the Whitebeard Pirates and Marco himself are unknown. However, Oda himself has pretty much confirmed that Marco is returning to the story in one of the SBS. Here’s what the creator of the One Piece series has to say:
D: Hello for the first time, Oda-sensei. I’ve read all the previous 57 volumes, and I was thinking,I don’t quite understand how “Phoenix Marco”‘sZoan fruit of the “legendary beast” kind is different from Ace’s “Meramera” fruit.P.N. CNY
O: Yeah, I know… I’ve omitted the explanation from this war arc, because I focused on the pacing and wanted to move the story forward. To explain Marco’s ability just a little bit: he’s Zoan, so he does have a body. But since he’s got “the blue fire of revival” – the Phoenix’s ability – wounds will regenerate, so attacks will not damage him (though there’s a limit to the regeneration). In other words, the flames are for regeneration. These blue flames don’t have the characteristics of actual fire – they don’t spread and burn things, and they aren’t hot. They’re completely different from Ace’s flames. I might touch on this in the main story at some point, so I’ll leave it at this for now.
Oda himself said that Marco’s ability will be explained once more in the future. This only means one thing, and that is Marco is going to appear in Wano Country, and fight alongside the Strawhat Pirates and the rest in order to take Kaido down once and for all. This is really interesting, and there have been many doubts about whether or not Marco is alive. But, i think with this SBS, it is safe to assume that Oda intends to bring him back into the story.
